Laney Guitar Amplifier Head, Black (LA30BL)

Questionable build quality; Ridiculous return policy
"After waiting patiently for an extended delivery timeframe, I contacted Laney to order a service manual a few days before the amp was to arrive. Two or three days later I got an email response from Laney advising service manuals were only available to authorized service locations. This is a tube amplifier that Laney touts was designed in 1968 but never produced. Apparently, Laney must think their 50+ year old technology is too precious to divulge. Give me a break.

At any rate, the amp arrived. Upon inspection, it looked a little low-end. The front and rear chassis was labeled with a very thin piece of plastic veneer, which had already begun to warp and looked as if it was printed on a low quality printer. The control knobs were about the same quality. The tolex covered cabinet looked good, however.

On firing it up at very low volume (0-1), it did sound good. Unfortunately, when I tried to crank it up to 3 or 4, it instantly failed, never to make another sound. I would have at least looked at the service manual but we know how that went…

To add insult to injury, when I attempted to start the return on Amazon, I was told not to expect a refund until 30 days after the amp was received back at Amazon. With policies like this, local music stores should be happy. One of Amazons attractions has always been a fast, guaranteed refund if purchases don’t work out.

Looks like there is now zero incentives to buy online at Amazon. Time to say goodbye."
