Bugera V22HD Infinium 22-watt Tube Head

Great all tube jazz amp.... After you upgrade the tubes!
"A couple of months later..... I will update my review yet again. I actually had this head up for sale for a while but it didn't sell so one day I had the thought to swap out the stock tubes. I opted for some NOS (both power tubes and 2 of the 3 preamp tubes - the 3rd is for the overdrive channel which I don't use). What a difference this upgrade made! Now the amp has more clean headroom and it retains it's glassy warmth when pushing it harder on a gig. I've been using this now happily for most of my gigs ever since swapping the tubes. Still wish it had a little more power so chords wouldn't break up as early as they do now. But it's only the louder gigs when I run into that. Now I find most scenarios this amp performs great. So bottom line: spend $100 to upgrade the tubes and even then this is still a great deal for the build and tonal quality of this head.

    .............

I have to update my review after using this head on a handful of gigs the past week. It turns out that even at 22watts that's just not enough clean headroom for a louder gig. Certainly the volume is there but the beautiful glassy round clean tones I heard in my living room could not be reproduced on the gig. With a quartet, chords had too much crunch and the brightness of the attack of single notes jumped out a little harsh for me. On a quieter duo gig with a pianist I loved at first how "wes-like" the sound was, but even on that gig when we got a little louder I felt like the character of the tone diminished. At home this amp is a dream, but it's not going to be able to be an everyday working jazz amp. This experience reminds me why I and many jazz guitarists opt for high wattage SS amps. Hey Bugera, can you make a one channel 40 watt 6v6 or 6L6 head under 25lbs? Please??

I'll leave my original review below....

I had never even heard of Bugera until buying one of their little 5watt combos off Craigslist. I was very impressed with that one so I started reading up on their other amps. I never could find a review by a jazz guitarist for these amps so here is one.

First, the 5watt amp actually sounds great with a hollowbody but it's too under powered for almost any gig beyond a solo /duo in a quiet setting. I've resisted tube amps forever mainly because of the size/weight of any one with enough clean headroom for even a moderately loud gig. At 28lbs I'm not super enthusiastic about lugging this around instead of my 5lb 400 watt Acoustic Image SS head, but the price was too tempting to not give it try. And I'm glad I did!

I have 2 different high end twin 8" cabinets that I use, a razors edge, and an ear candy. They both sound great but the ear candy is a little brighter. This head through either cab sounds big, lush, round, glassy and super clear. I've had a few days to get a feel for it, the tone controls are old school and straight forward. It's easy to dial in a range of appealing clean tones. I think it won't be any problem to adjust as needed to work in the sonic space of different rooms. I'll have to give it a go in a few more situations to see how the headroom holds up but my sense is there's plenty there.

I don't see myself bringing this out for every routine gig, but all things considered for a tube amp, 22 watts seems like just the right power level to keep the size/weight within reason and deliver a workable sound for a jazz player.

Two last thoughts, I don't use distortion so i don't care about that channel, but I did check it out and wasn't particularly impressed. (I'd love it if they could trim the size and shave 5lbs by making a 1 channel version of this amp!!) The other thing is I think the speaker cabinet probably makes a big difference. Both of mine are pretty high end, even the little 5watt Bugera sounds worlds better through either cab instead of the stock speaker. So I definitely recommend the head over a combo and also with all the money you saved buying this instead of a Fender, invest in a quality closed back cabinet!

All in all, I'm extremely happy with this amp. I don't want to give the impression that I'm qualifying my recommendation by mentioning the price, but I got this when Amazon dropped the price to $260, and that just seems insane to get such a nice tube amp for that price. But this rig sounds as good as a deluxe reverb or even a twin to me (L5 has something to do with that for sure) so if it was twice as expensive it would still be a good buy for its comparative practicality. I hope this review will be helpful to other curious jazz guitarists!"
    Wonderful tube tone!
"I bought this because I wanted real tube tone. This is the second all-tube amp I've ever owned. The first one was a Fender Hot Rod Deville 60 watt combo that I eventually got rid of because it was so loud it was impractical for me. But in the years since I have been pining away for that glorious tube tone. I finally decided to get a tube amp again. I have some home-made speaker cabinets I made and put a 12" Eminence "The Governor" in one and a 10" Jensen in the other. So I got the Bugera V22 Infinium HD (head). The price was right when compared to equivalent name brand amps. I have a 3 year warranty, so no worries there. But the best thing about it is TUBE TONE for days! I haven't even run any pedals through it yet, it sounds so good by itself. I play a HSS strat style guitar. The neck pickup on the clean channel and the neck/middle on the clean channel is glorious. the reverb is fantastic. I can feel the tone through the floor. This is what I've been missing! There is a ton of headroom on the clean channel, very little breakup - but that's what I wanted. If I want dirt I can add a pedal or use the drive channel. And speaking of the drive channel - very nice crunchy tone so far with a decent amount of variation. I haven't played with the drive channel a whole lot yet, because I'm so in love with the clean. I like to use the boost on the drive channel but no boost on the clean. I'm so happy with this amp and I know I've just scratched the surface. And by the way - the volume issues I had with my Deville are not an issue with this amp - there is a switch that cuts the power if you desire, plus it is "only" 22 watts, so while it can get loud enough to be painful, (and certainly gig-able) the volume control is gradual enough that I can dial it back when in my house to where my wife doesn't want to kill me and still have the tone I like. I couldn't give this amp a higher endorsement - I really love it."
Great tube amp for the price.
"Amazing amp for the price great crunch and nice clean channel."
