Best Portable Ukulele Amp
"I'm using this primarily for ukulele. And wow *THIS* is it. I'd tried a few before arriving at this little gem of an amp. What I was looking for was a decent acoustic practice amp for home or small groups that was portable and could take batteries. I tried the Blackstar Fly3 but it was just not as clean sounding - I could get close just using my electric guitar Vox 10 amp if I tweaked the settings enough. So I came across the THR series of amps and decided to give the THR10C a try which is geared towards Jazz thinking the cleaner output would lend itself well to nylon. It's a really nice amp but still too electric sounding. That's when I discovered they made a acoustic specific amp, this THR5A. Not only does it have a "nylon" specific setting (which I actually do not play in all of the time), but it has mic models rather than amp models. There is a mixer that blends straight pickup with the mic model. And if you wanna get a little funky, it also has some reverb and hall effect. The compression effect is great to tighten up the sound on strumming so it sounds cleaner. The big thing missing from its THR10 cousins is the ability to memorize settings but I'm ok with that. Also, I understand that the THR5 series puts out the same power as the THR10 series which I was afraid coming from the 10C I would give up some volume but not the case.
Definitely consider the case from Yamaha made for this series of amps. It was designed to fit the longer THR10 series but the extra space with the THR5A just gives you more room for gear. Also grab 2 sets of 8x AA batteries. A single set of 8x AA lasts quite a while actually but its always nice to have a backup because charging them can take a while. I use Eneloop as recommended but I use those batteries for everything anyway (beware of defects being sold on ebay for cheap).
Why the missing star? On BOTH my 10C which I returned for the 5A, NEITHER included this Cubase AI recording software DVD ROM. I thought maybe it was a download but the only thing on the Yamaha site was the editor software (to edit models) and USB drivers."
